Sony fans arrived en masse to thousands of retail locations across the country braving chilly conditions and long hours to score a unit at launch. Most walked away empty handed. Strolling into a retailer today is every bit as dicey as it was on launch day.
At present, the PS3 has potential more than it has anything else. As deserving of recognition as the hardware truly is, Sony really needs to put it to good use through compelling software. Games such as Resistance: Fall of Man not withstanding, Sony ripped the gameplay for most PS3 games right out of the last generation. While entertaining, a platform as powerful as the PS3 is capable of far more innovative software. This generation should see the release of titles whose gameplay match the quality of the visuals.
And the PS3, with all its technical prowess and raw horsepower, is more than up to the mask. But for now, it's just a hope shared among gaming enthusiasts. Whether the PS3 delivers in the future is entirely up to Sony and developers. With few exceptions, the games available today need work. As previously mentioned, Resistance is clearly the only must-have title available at present. Behind it sits a handful of fun, yet somewhat formulaic entries like Ridge Racer 7 , Tiger Woods 07 and Call of Duty 3.
These all showed a little of what the system could do graphically, though Call of Duty 3 and a few other games suffered from performance glitches. And while a hectic development schedule is likely to blame, it nevertheless looks bad for the system. After all, there's nothing worse than touting a system's power for years only to have its performance bested by a weaker system, at least in terms of raw computing power. But that's exactly what happened. This trend of future potential over present satisfaction continues with the way the PS3 handles online gaming.
It's no secret Sony fans wanted the PS3 to mimic or improve upon the Xbox Live experience in terms of flexibility and user-friendliness. While Sony may implement improved friend tracking and messaging functionality in future updates, the service currently sags.
It's possible to access a friend's list and messaging options when touring the Cross Media bar and listening to music, but not while in a game. And that's exactly where gamers need it.
Being able to see what a friend is playing and join them or invite them to something else is a huge part of what makes the Xbox experience what it is. The PS3 will lag behind until it implements a similar system. All of which sounds overly negative, of course. But this is just a quick look at what's going on at present.
The issues mentioned above, coupled with the lack of scaling and shortage of units, did nothing to sell the PS3 as the powerhouse next-generation system it truly is. Here's to hoping for a brighter tomorrow. Games of had plenty of extremely strong PS3 releases. Here are the 10 highest-rated games of the year. But let's be honest, Resistance doesn't have to be perfect to be fun, and fun is exactly what it is. From start to finish, Fall of Man is one hell of an outstanding roller coaster ride that every last PS3 owner needs for day one.
Epic boss battles the final few are crazy! But above all else, it's the multiplayer elements that truly ascend this one to the next level. It's a must have for sure. Its feeling of motion and controls are top-notch, and its franchise mode is the one to beat. The SIXAXIS control features are fantastic, though the visuals and menus should be touched up a bit to make for a complete next-gen experience.
If you're into hockey, don't pass this up.. It's a gimmick that's contained to only a few situations during play, but it's a contribution because it's easy to learn, yet challenging to pull off. It also helps give you a better sense of the shot stick timing, which will definitely make you a better player in the long run. It isn't a huge leap over the version released ten months ago either. That said, Round 3 is still one hell of an addicting multiplayer game that provides hours and hours of hardcore boxing fun.
The toned-down haymakers, better balancing, and inclusion of various styles makes playing with your buddy an awesome experience, and the mechanics are so good it even makes fighting against the CPU worthwhile in the beginning. It's not to be missed if you have gaming roommates or friends, but it's not to be counted on if you regularly forget what the sun looks like.
However, since this is the exact same title that's come out on the with minor adjustments to some of the gameplay and the visuals, it's hard to be blown away with its debut on the PS3.
If you're moving from the PS2 to the PS3, you'll most likely be impressed by the title, but if you happen to own the version, there's not really anything included here that would make you want to purchase this title again. While not a revolution, Ridge Racer 7 takes the long-running series forward. It keeps the larger-than-life race dynamic that fans have come to love and adds a rewarding customization option. An even bigger enhancement deals strictly with online functionality.
Would-be drivers will feel like members of a global race community, complete with constantly updating race statistics and personal achievements. A nice selection of tracks, tunes and rides round out this very solid package. It's not devoid of technical or design flaws, but its combat system, customization options, interesting storyline, and multiplayer features make it a good choice for comic fans or role-playing newbies.
Plus, in a sea of launch titles primarily made up of sports games, racers, and shooters, it's a nice change of pace. In other words, it may not reinvent the wheel, but it still rolls. Need for Speed Carbon is an overall fun racing game, though in large part it's simply more of the same from EA. Cars still feel too similar to each other, and as they're the stars of any racing game, we wish there was a bit more character here.
Autosculpt is a fantastic addition to the series' already great customization features. Carbon winds up being a pretty fun racer, and fans of Most Wanted likely won't be disappointed. NBA 07 could've remained a simple port of the current gen version, but instead, it chose to improve on a number of game features.
Game AI is stronger, the shooting mechanic is tighter, and the NBA Replay feature is one of the best modes included in a sports game in some time. Sony's first party basketball title made a huge leap forward in making the jump to the PS3, which bodes well for future games in the series. Full Auto 2 improves on its predecessor in almost every way imaginable. The destructible environments work well and actually change the flow of every race and the battle arenas add variety. What's more, the game runs smoother and looks better than its older sibling.
It's still light on story, so those looking for added narrative won't find it. Still, it's a safe bet most players didn't care about story the first time around. They'll care even less now thanks to all the added content. Call of Duty 3 Activision. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance Activision. Ridge Racer 7 Namco Bandai. Need for Speed: Carbon EA. Tony Hawk's Project 8 Activision.
Fight Night Round 3 EA. Need for Speed Carbon EA. Micah Seff Blog Ass. We pick the best from the first batch of playable PlayStation 3 titles. Last year, Sony wowed everyone with incredible trailers that showed the promised power of the PS3. The introduction of the next-generation system was preceded by a ton of visuals promising new innovative technology and gameplay that we could expect from the most powerful system ever built.
We were all impressed by the technical demos, real-time presentations and other images that paraded in front of our eyes, and couldn't wait to get our hands on the game demos to put the system to the test. Fast forward to this year's E3. While the announcement of the worldwide launch date and price were good to know, the stale press conference and surprising lack of playable PS3 titles made the selections of awards rather difficult in the PS3's first year of eligibility.
While we saw a large number of titles for the system that will be launching in six months, an overwhelming amount of them were trailers, pre-recorded in-engine footage, or running on separate systems and that knocked a lot of games out of the running for consideration.
That isn't to say that this year's awards are a compensatory handout for the recognized titles below -- far from it. These games represented some of the best that the PS3 had to offer at E3 this year, which definitely bodes well if all of the system's titles live up to the quality of the winners and nominees.
Note that our criteria for choosing the PlayStation 3 E3 awards is a little more strict than usual for multiple reasons, one of which being that the system isn't out yet. In order for a game to qualify for an award, it had to actually be shown running on some sort of PlayStation 3 hardware, including a PC development kit.
